Here are some questions/answers that we are frequently asked. If you have additional questions that aren't covered here, please feel free to give us a call at Boulder Veterinary Hospital.
1. What are the Hospital hours?
BVH is open Monday through Friday from 8-12 and 1:30 -5:30. On Saturday from 8-12. We are open for your convenience from noon-1:30 weekdays for emergencies and pet supply pick up. HOURS OF OPERATION
2. What do I do in case of an emergency?
We will take emergencies during regular business hours. After hours emergencies are referred to Alpenglow Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. A well trained staff is available all nights, weekends and holidays. Our phones are call forwarded so you may either call our number at (303)442-6262 or call them direct at (303) 443-4569. We also have a close working relationship with Boulder Emergency Pet Clinic. You may reach them at (303) 440-7722. If you live closer to Longmont then Boulder we also work closely with Animal Emergency and Critical Care which may be reached at (303) 678-8844. EMERGENCY
3. Do I need to have an appointment?
In an effort to avoid prolonged delays for you and your pet, we function on an appointment basis. Walk in exams will be done on a time available basis, with appointments being given priority. Of course, if you have an emergency during hours, you and your pet will be seen immediately.
4. What forms of payment do you accept?
Cash, Check, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover
5. Can I make payments?
We request payment in full when services are rendered. Recommendations and an estimate of charges will be discussed with you before proceeding with any diagnostics or treatment. If for some reason you are not able to make your full payment, arrangements should be discussed with the doctor before the services are rendered. Typically payment plans are only available to established clientele.
6. At what age can I have my pet spayed or neutered?
Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery. Also a pre-anesthetic blood screen is recommended prior to undergoing anesthesia and surgery.
7. What is the pre-anesthetic blood screening?
This is a blood test that is run prior to surgery. Blood tests are required in all patients over 7 years of age but recommended in all patients. It tests the organ functions, blood counts and clotting function of your pet. The pre-anesthetic blood screening is done to assure safety during surgery, the ability to heal following surgery, and to tailor the anesthetic protocol to your pet's individual needs. SURGICAL FAQ
8. How long do the sutures stay in after my pet's surgery?
Procedures involving sutures require them to be removed in 10- 14 days following the surgery.
9. Is it a good idea to let my pet have at least one litter?
No, there is no advantage to letting your pet have one litter. However there are plenty of advantages to having you pet spayed or neutered. These advantages include decreasing the chances of breast tumors later in life, decreasing the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life, decreasing the desire to roam the neighborhood, decreasing the incidence of prostate cancer later in life, helping prevent spraying and marking, and also decreases the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens.
10. Do you board pets?
No. Special exceptions are made for pets with medical conditions but we are not staffed or equipped for regular routine boarding.
11. Where will my pet be housed while at BVH?
Our dog kennels are all indoors. Dogs are walked 3 times daily while they are hospitalized. Cats are housed in a separate area away from the dogs. Blankets and food are provided for our patients, but you are always welcome to bring your own.
12. Do you refer cases to specialists?
We are in frequent contact with specialists at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as those available in the Denver/Boulder area. We will either have a specialist come into our practice or refer you to the appropriate specialist to insure your animal receives the best of care.
13. Can I choose the doctor I want to see?
If you prefer to see a specific doctor, please inform the receptionist when you make the appointment and we will make every effort to schedule appropriately.
